Sarah Jessica Parker
by Barney Battles
Sarah Jessica Parker’s mother and father recognised something special. They were so certain of her ability to succeed that they moved the family to New York City on her behalf. It was a big decision, but their instincts were sound. Once their daughter’s energy collided with the creative buzz of the Big Apple, it was a short skip to Broadway and beyond. Of course, hard work and good luck were only half the story. Sarah’s potent astrological signature played a key role in shaping her life and career.

She arrived in the world on 25th March, 1965 under the Western sign of Aries and the Chinese symbol of the Snake. Far from being born with a silver spoon, Sarah’s came into a working-class family. Her parents struggled to make ends meet—even spent time in the welfare system—but Barbara Parker was determined to expose her children to dance and theatre, and Sarah attended classes in singing and ballet from a tender age.

As one of eight siblings from her mother’s two marriages, Sarah had plenty of competition at home during these early years. Fortunately, she also had plenty of energy to lead the pack. Aries is the pioneer of the Zodiac, famous for its jump-right-in mentality. Many of the world’s strongest personalities are born under this fiery sign, and young Sarah would have thrived in the competitive environment of a big family. Subconsciously it would have prepared her for bigger hurdles ahead.

Sarah was only 11 years old when the decision to pack up and head for the big city was made. Her parents knew that being in New York would allow her to take her skills to the next level. While other kids her age might have buckled under the pressure, Sarah’s Aries fire burned bright and accepted the challenge. Within a year she was given a minor role in the Broadway production of Annie. After performing that role and studying tenaciously for the next two years, she grabbed the spotlight as the star orphan herself! Barbara Parker’s daughter was barely a teenager and already the door to stardom was opening.

The transition to film came after Sarah moved to Hollywood to attend high school and further develop her career. It is here, in her first TV and film roles, that the energy of the Snake began to show—both in her characters and in real life. Snakes are a crafty and fashionable creatures that prefer a stable, even “normal” life with plenty of material comforts. As such, they often stay behind the scenes and display a fierce reaction when the unexpected comes. Sarah’s early roles in films like Footloose and Honeymoon in Vegas reflect this exasperated side of her personality. She is quoted as saying that she never thought she was pretty enough to play lead roles; this too is a tell-tale sign of her Snake nature. At the same time, Aries will seldom cower from the spotlight. Sarah’s self-consciousness and fierce confidence came through her characters in equal measures, allowing audiences to connect on multiple levels.

By the time HBO approached Sarah for Sex in the City, she had already built an impressive resum in feature films, having starred opposite the likes of Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr. and Bruce Willis.  Moving into TV was a difficult decision, but the opportunity to explore her Aries and Snake natures through the character of Carrie Bradshaw proved too difficult to pass up. Carrie’s desire for stability, her glitzy fashion-sense, and her aggressive romantic style gelled perfectly with Sarah’s own personality—this is evidenced by the staggering success of the show and films.

But with all this success in the acting world, what about the most indispensible of life’s endeavors—love? Sarah’s first high-profile relationship was a seven year stint with Robert Downey Jr. He was born only a few days after Sarah, which means they share the signs of Aries and Snake. This level of synastry often leads to success, but with these particular signs, a lack of balancing influence can sabotage the chemistry. Both actors were highly successful and headstrong, and while they lasted twice as long as many Hollywood couples, Downey Jr.’s drug abuse proved to be the final straw.

Enter yet another Aries co-star: Matthew Broderick. Born a few years before Jessica, he provides a more dynamic synastry with his Chinese sign of Tiger. Where Snakes want quiet and stability, Tigers are among the most adventurous Chinese signs. They are also loyal and trustworthy, which place high on a Snake’s list of desirable traits. Sarah feeds off of the explosive Aries energy, both in her career and her personal life, while Broderick’s Tiger nature creates expansion and upward movement between the couple. Three years and fifteen years later, they are one of the longest-standing couples in the industry.

Having satisfied her Aries urge to blaze a trail to success, Sarah has been quiet in recent years. A peaceful family life seems to be just the thing after her wild ride from a small town in Ohio to the peak of stardom—especially given her Snake-like tendency to hide in a comfortable place. But the sign of the Ram will not go quietly into the night. As Sarah’s children grow and begin their own lives, it’s doubtful that this talent will stay under the radar for long.
