Flowers have been significant for every major civilisation and remain so today. We name children after them (Holly, Rose, Daisy, Heather, Jasmine), and we include them in almost every major occasion - birth, marriage and finally death. They help us express ourselves to another, when we are at a loss for words, but the messages they convey are not entirely accidental.
The use of flowers as coded language evolved through Medieval and Victorian times. Men and woman were not allowed to openly declare their feelings, so they used flowers to give romantic messages that often went unnoticed by others. Over time the messages became more complex. Here are some examples of what different flowers say.
Roses - Love, Romance, Congratulations
Poinsettias - Purity
Lavender - I only want you as a friend
Anemone - This love is coming to an end
Iris - Good news
Heather (white) - Protection and wishes to come true
Tulip - Perfect lover, fame
Hyacinth (purple or pink) - Forgive me, I`m sorry
Calla Lillies - Beauty
Gardenia - Secret love
Chrysanthemum (Red) - I love you too
Lotus - New beginnings, sexuality
Sunflower - Adoration, longevity, loyalty
So next time you use flowers to send a message, make sure you send the right one!
